Congratulations UBC Prez Santa Ono
I was honoured to be at the installation of Professor Santa J. Ono as 15th President and Vice-Chancellor of UBC. It was a wonderful ceremony which included special guest speakers, the Oath of Office, presented by Her Honour, The Honourable Judith Guichon, OBC, Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, and some musical performances. I tweeted: Thinking about my grandma. Arrival in #Slocan – #JapaneseCanadian incarceration. Musical piece from Joy Kogawa’s #Obasan at installation ceremony @ubcprez @chancentreubc
Tosh and Mary Kitagawa were also in attendance, and we had a lovely lunch at UBC and then attended a forum at the Old Auditorium, Celebrating Discovery: Four Visionary Thinkers, hosted by Professor Ono.
Visionary thinkers help drive new discoveries which impact the world in revolutionary ways. Newly installed UBC President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Santa J. Ono, interacted with four North American thought leaders in the areas of brain health, robotics, music and mathematics.
After this talk your brain will not be the same — Lara Boyd, Canada Research Chair in Neurobiology of Motor Learning; Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Medicine, UBC
Discovering what it means not to be human — Elizabeth Croft (BASc’88), Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UBC & Associate Dean, Education and Professional Development, Faculty of Applied Science, UBC
Choral Bridges: Musical Pathways for Dialogue and Peace — Hussein Janmohamed (BMus’96, MMus’98, MMus’14), Singer, Composer and Community Music Director; PhD student (Music Education), University of Toronto
The Man Who Knew Infinity: The Legacy and Legend of Srinivasa Ramanujan — Ken Ono, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, Emory University
I enjoyed a special dinner at Sage Bistro. Photos on Instagram and then returned to the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts for a Celebration Concert in honour of Professor Santa J. Ono, featuring students and faculty members from the UBC School of Music and special musical guests, Dr Judith Forst, Dr Momoro Ono, Edmund Chung, and Irene M Setiawan.
It was a wonderful day filled with celebration, stimulating discussion, and moving musical performances. It was great to meet Professor Ono’s family.
Congratulations UBC President Santa Ono.
