May is Asian Heritage Month
It’s been a hectic Asian Heritage Month which started at the opening on April 16 in the Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre. We experienced a taste of the art, music, spoken word, and history that people could expect for the month. Every year explorASIAN chooses a community to highlight and this year, it is the Japanese Canadian community. The Greater Vancouver Japanese Canadian Citizens’ Association (GVJCCA) took the opportunity to organize and participate in a number of events, some of which you can see listed on our new website at gvjcca.org
The events continue with a Labour Community event on May 29, the GVJCCA Honouring Our People Book Launch on June 4, and the finale event, the 20th Anniversary explorASIAN Recognition Gala on June 11. At the gala, a few of our Japanese Canadian elders along with the GVJCCA will be recognized.
Asian Heritage Month is a wonderful way to engage many people so they can learn about the culture and diversity within the Asian communities, and about the many contributions and history of Asian Canadians. Let’s also use these connections to build on our work and to look at ways to collaborate so we can continue to promote understanding and learning throughout the year.
