T Buck Suzuki
My uncle Buck died years ago when I was still in school. I never got a chance to talk to him about his union activism – and in school I don’t recall learning anything about unions.
I knew he was a fisher. I never knew about his union activism until I became involved in the labour movement and started researching labour history. I also found out that Buck Suzuki was an environmental activist years before most people knew about environmental issues.
When I became vice president of BCGEU I said to my auntie Jean (Buck’s wife) I wonder what conversations I could have had with Uncle Buck. She told me that no doubt we would have had some good conversations because I was never afraid of speaking out about injustices.
